Sharp Island

Field trips are an essential part of the study of geography. In line with the content and progress of Grade 9 Geography, our school organised a field trip for the Grade 9 students to Sharp Island within the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geological Park.

This inspiring field trip was organised by Mr. Samuel Chan, a renowned geography educator in Hong Kong. Mr.Chan is a famous geology field trip leader and planner and has published many popular HKDSE geography reference books. Under the guidance of Mr. Chan and the school teachers, the students had a fruitful field trip to learn about wave erosion and sedimentary landforms along the Sai Kung coast.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives of the students on this field trip were:

1. To learn about wave erosion and sedimentary landforms along the Sai Kung coast (including geo, sea caves, sea cliffs and tombolo, etc.).

2. To identify the igneous rocks (e.g. volcanic breccia, monzonite (commonly known as pineapple bun rock) and rhyolite, etc.) that formed in the caldera and its rim 140 million years ago.

3. Collect data in the field to verify the following geographical concepts

a) The further away from the shoreline, the larger the deposit.

b) The further away from the shoreline, the finer the roundness index of the deposit.

After boarding the boat at Sai Kung Pier, the students listened to Mr Chan"s introduction while enjoying the coastal scenery, feeling the sea waves and observing the wave erosion. Arriving on Sharp Island, the students went began their fieldwork at Tombolo during low tide, where they touched the igneous rocks and followed the warnings to protect these unique rocks and the creatures living underneath, demonstrating care of this unique area.

About the Sharp Island

Lying 2 km from Sai Kung town centre, Sharp Island is a narrow island in Sai Kung Inner Sea. This Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark attraction is only 15 minutes by boat from Sai Kung Pier.

The island is about 2,500m in length and about 500m across from east to west. The highest point is 136m above sea level.

In recent years, Sharp Island has gained great attention with its unique geological and coastal features. It is home to different types of igneous rock such as volcanic rock breccia, rhyolite, and the pineapple bun rocks. The most stunning coastal feature is the natural tombolo that emerges only at low tide linking Sharp Island with Kiu Tau Chau.
